Introduction and History
Manchester Airport handles over nineteen and a half million passengers each year to over 180 destinations and is located in the North of England, 10 miles southwest of downtown Manchester. Manchester airport is the 12th busiest UK airport with 3 terminals, 2 runways and a train station. It was voted European Airport of the Year in the 2001. The train stationconnects trains and buses to the terminal. Manchester aiport is owned by the Manchester Airport Group. The airport was formerly known as Ringway and is a transatlantic hub for bmi and BA. The Airbus A340 and the Boeing 747 can use the runway due to its length. In 1928 the site location Barton was chosen for the old Airport. In 1930 the airport was opened. In 1934 Manchester Corporation chose Ringway where Fairey Aviation was buildig airplanes. By 1945, the airfield was utilised by troops of the Britains Airborne Forces. In 1949, the airport terminal facilities were extended. In 1954 the airport logs its millionth passenger since WW2. By 1960, a new terminal building and air traffic control facilities were consructed. The runway extension to 2745m took place in 1969. In 1980, Manchester was defined an International Gateway for long haul flights. Manchester airport is located in the county of Lancashire near the Pennines 10 miles southwest of Manchester.

Local Travel Connections
Road: The get to the airport take the M56 at J5 and all terminals are signposted.
Train: Train services from Manchester airport connect to 100 UK destinations. Destinations include the Lake District and York. You can connect to Manchester Piccadilly and from there stations nationwide. Tickets are sold in machines in the ticket office.
