The airport was opened in 1994 with a brand new terminal building costing over thirty million pounds. The site is located close to the M27 mototway and is owned by BAA.   In 1914 at the site there was a flying display of loops and stunts. Before World War One the Government permitted flights to Plymouth and London around 1918. In 1932 Southampton Municipal airport was established by the Southampton Corporation. In 1936 the prototype of the famous Spitfire took off from the airport. Following WW2 a normal air service resumed to the Channel Islands following the airports use during WW2. By 1965 a concrete runway was built, following the airports sale from the Southampton Corporation. In 1984 BAA modernised the facilities. In 1988 the airport was bought by a consortium for the purposes of redevelopment. In 1993 planning permission was granted and construction began of the new facilities. In 1994 Southampton International Airport was established in name and opened by Prince Andrew.   The airport is located four miles north of Southampton City close to the M27 mototrway J5. &lt;br&gt;

&lt;b&gt;Facilities &lt;/b&gt;- Introduction Facilities at Southampton Airport include a baby care room, lost property office, post office, a first aid room and smoking areas. Check in desks are located in the main concourse on the left.  &lt;br&gt;

&lt;b&gt;Food&lt;/b&gt;: The Aura provides a choice of sandwiches, starbucks coffee, and bar with snacks.  &lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Shops&lt;/b&gt;: Shops at Southampton Airport include:- WHSmith which sells books, magazines, snacks and stationery. Also, World Duty Free sells duty free tobacco, skincare, cosmetics and watches.   &lt;br&gt;

&lt;b&gt;Currency Exchange&lt;/b&gt;: There is a Barclays bank ATM next to the bureau de change on the main concourse.  &lt;br&gt;

&lt;b&gt;Disabled Facilities&lt;/b&gt;: Facilities for disabled passengers using Southampton airport include a dedicated lift, induction loops, adapted payphones for people using hearing aids, reserved parking and specially designed toilets. &lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Business Travellers&lt;/b&gt; - The is a BA and flybe lounge at Southampton Airport.   Business passengers can access the internet using the wireless LAN for their laptops and mobile. There are also pay as you go stand alone fixed terminals in the departure lounge. &lt;br&gt;

Getting There and Local Travel Connections&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br&gt;

&lt;b&gt;Road&lt;/b&gt;: From M27 J5 follow signs to the airport. From Oxford use the A34.     &lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Train&lt;/b&gt;: Southampton Airport Parkway is connected to the airport. There are 3 fast trains to London Waterloo every hour.  &lt;br&gt;

&lt;b&gt;Taxi&lt;/b&gt;: Taxis are provided by Airportcarz which are based on the main concourse .  &lt;br&gt;
&lt;b&gt;&lt;br&gt;
Bus or Coach&lt;/b&gt;: Bus&apos; to and from the airport are the 101 between the airport and Southampton University and the city centre. Also the Uni Link service and Solent Blue Line leave from Southampton Airport Parkway Station.  &lt;br&gt;
