Introduction and History - Cardiff airport is only 12 miles from Cardiff City Centre (the Welsh Capital). In the early 1940's the Air Ministry purchsed land for a training facility for spitfire pilots. In 1952, Aer Lingus started a Dublin route service. Glamorgan County Council took control in 1965. By 1971, the runway was extended for wide bodied aircraft. A 750ft Runway extension continued in 1986, leading to US and Canadaian 747 charter flights. Soon after the main British Airways engineering and maintenance facility was built. In the 1990's Manx Airlines provided daily European services. By 1992, passenger traffic was over sveven hundred and fourty thousand a year. In 1993 modernisation and building expansion projects helped to boost traffic numbers. In April 1995 TBI plc bought the shares of the airport. Cardiff international Airport is situated in Rhoose, 12 miles west of Cardiff City Centre and 10 miles from Junction 33 on the M4.

Facilities - Introduction There are 25 check in desks on the ground floor terminal building. Baby changing facilities are available with baby changing tables. The games zones provide amusement. Public telephones are in the terminal and arrivals halls. There are public internet telephones on the first floor.

Food: The food court on the first floor departures provides 'Food Village', Burger King and The Scrum Half Bar. Airside facilities include Café Ritazza and The Echo bar serving food and drinks.

Shops: Shops include two World News outlets selling books, sweets, newspapers and tobacco. Also a Duty Free shop sells perfume, cosmetics, sweets and clothing.

Disabled Facilities: Disabled facilities include allocated car parking, wheelchair access, low level entrance kerbs, lifts, specially designed toilets, minicom deaf facility and induction loops around the airport.

Getting There and Local Travel Connections..

Road: From the M4, exit at J33 and follow the A4232. Take the first exit off the A4232 at Culverhouse Cross and follow signs to the airport along the A4050 and A4226.

Train: Cardiff Central rain station is accessed via a bus or taxi form the airport.

Taxi: Taxis are available 24 hours a day, at the terminal building entrance. Cardiff Airport Taxis has adapted taxis with wheelchair acess.

Bus or Coach: The Airbus Xpress bus service (X91) goes between Cardiff City Centre and the airport. The 146 EST bus goes hourly between Barry and the airport. The X5 First bus service goes from Llantwit Major to the airport via Barry, every 2 hours. The National Express Coach Service operates regular direct services to Cardiff Central Bus Station.
